Seminar on sports conducted

A seminar cum discussion on the topic "Future of Sports in Manipur with fair play" was organised by Kangleipak Kanba Lup at Manipur Press Club, here, on Friday.
Speaking on the occasion, Lup secretary general Ngamkhei Ngakpa Luwang opined that though Manipur is considered the powerhouse of sports in the country yet the state is unable to utilise the funds sanctioned for developments of sports.
Manipur has a total of 33 centres for implementing the Khelo India programme out of the total 100 centres identified in India considering the fact that Manipur is the powerhouse of sports.
However, the programme has not been implemented in the manner it should be, he claimed.
The secretary general further said that though the state lacks basic sports infrastructure, it has been able to produce a large number of Olympians.
Nevertheless, the state has not been able to properly implement the centre of excellence established under various schemes to produce more Olympians.
The seminar has been con ducted to identify the loopholes in this regard through the discussions by the re source persons during the seminar following which a concept note will be developed and submitted to the Prime Minister, chief minister and the DG of the Sports Authority of India so as to build a bright -er future of sports in Manipur.
Indian Mountaineering Foundation member Yambem Laba, who was also present at the discourse, pointed out the need to desist from favouritism while appointing coaches by higher officials of the sports department.
The seminar which was presided over by Manipur Human Rights Commission former acting chairperson Khaidem Mani, was also attended by many renowned persons of sports as resource persons.
