Imphal, January 20 2023:
Maintaining that police investigation into the recent seizure of a huge consignment of drugs from five commando personnel would not be able to bring justice, the Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) has demanded a CBI enquiry.
Notably, 1.336 Kg of heroin (No 4) and 9.15 Kgs of WY tablets were seized from a commando team led by 7th MR Havildar Kh Achouba along with Rs 80,000 in cash by Kakching district police on January 16.Taking strong exception to the seizure of a huge consignment of drugs from commando personnel, members of MPCC frontal cells like students wing, mahila wing, youth wing and legal department staged a protest demonstration at Congress Bhavan here today.
Speaking to media persons by the sideline of the protest demonstration, MPCC legal department chairman S Shyamcharan said that the Congress party wants an impartial and thorough investigation of the case.
As an FIR has been already registered, the five accused commando personnel who are presently in police custody should be subjected to proper questioning so as to elicit all details, he said.
Pointing out that all the five commando personnel are of the ranks of Havildar and Rifleman even though drugs worth more than Rs 10 crore were seized from their possession, Shyamcharan expressed strong suspicion of some big players using the commando personnel as couriers.
Although many drug transporters and drivers have been arrested, no drug lord or kingpin has been pulled up so far, he said.
After Loukhosei Zou who was arrested along with a huge quantity of drugs worth several crores was acquitted by Court, a large section of people urged the Government to file an appeal at higher Court against the Court's verdict but the Government paid no heed, he lamented.
"We cannot believe the drug seizure case of January 16 will be investigated impartially or thoroughly", the MPCC legal department chairman said.
Maintaining that the arrested individuals do not have the financial capacity to do multi-crore drug business, Shyamcharan expressed strong suspicion that some big players were behind them.
The arrested commando personnel must be subjected to proper questioning and it must be ascertained who handed them the huge consignment of drugs and where it should be taken to, he continued.
Many people are of the opinion that some wealthy men handed the drug consignment to the commando personnel with an instruction to hand it over to some drug dealers.
A large section of people see the commando personnel as mere transporters, he said.
In the case of Lukhosei Zou too, the driver was made the scapegoat, he remarked.
It is very unlikely that police investigation into the recent drug seizure will do justice to the particular case.
He then urged the Government to hand over the case to the CBI.
