Saying that poppy plantations and deforestation are the chief reasons for shrinkage of water sources, Chief Minister N Biren Singh has said that two Cabinet meetings have already been convened over the water shortage issue besieging the State and some initiatives have been taken up to resolve it.
He also said that the Government will surely find a solution for the issue to alleviate the suffering of the people.
Chief Minister N Biren Singh made the remark during a book releasing function of the revised and updated edition of 'Exam Warrior' written by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
At the ceremony, N Biren continued that water from Thoubal Multipurpose Project has reached Chingkheiching Water Supply Project and it will soon be provided to the public to make up for the shortage.
The Chief Minister went on to state that a study of different water sources has been completed to provide water through water tankers if an emergency arises.
Further stating that deforestation and poppy plantations are harmful to the environment and major reasons for shrinkage of water bodies, N Biren maintained that the Government will carry out extensive afforestation drives during the monsoon season.
This culture of chieftainship also seems to be promoting deforestation and it is unfortunate, he said and added that felling of trees without authorisation is not permitted even in unclassed forests.
To a demand raised by the Congress party to hand over the arrest of five police personnel along with a huge consignment of drugs at Kakching recently case to CBI, the Chief Minister stated that now is not the time to engage in childish policy as the Government is working very hard to eradicate drug menace from the State.
He also said that there is nothing to hide in the case as the five police personnel were caught red handed with drugs.
Continuing that there were altogether 28 cases of police personnel arrested with drugs from 2012 to 2016, N Biren said that he has no idea how those cases were closed.
If the Congress is persistent on handing the case to CBI then let the agency investigate those 28 cases first and more can follow, he responded.
Meanwhile, N Biren said that the book written by the Prime Minister will be beneficial to the students, parents and teachers.
The Chief Minister also said that the Prime Minister talked about students being exam warriors instead of exam worriers in the book.
The book will teach students on how to face exams, N Biren said, adding that it is an effort to give exams in a fun way.
The Prime Minister also expressed the need for the students to celebrate examinations like festivals and create a stress-free environment for them, the Chief Minister said.
In the book, the Prime Minister also advised the students to focus more on their knowledge and highlighted the role and responsibilities of parents, teachers, guardians, he added.
The press conference was also attended by Water Resources Minister Awangbow Newmai, Education Minister The Basantakumar, Education Commissioner H Gyanprakash and Education (S) Director L Nandakumar Singh.
