Imphal, April 10 2023:
There are now no illegal immigrants at Chanam Sandrok village, said Lai Haraoba and Village Development Authority (LAHAVIDA) secretary Irengbam Indrajit.
Addressing the media at Manipur Press Club Imphal yesterday, Irengbam Indrajit said there has been no immigrants/residents in the village since 2017 .
"It is true that there were some people from Mizoram who were engaged with Christian Missionary work at Chanam Sandrok some 11-12 years ago.
There was no Inner Line Permit (ILP) System in the State at the time and they worked at the Grace Children English School.
They went back to their State in 2016 and they are presently staying there," said Indrajit.
Notably, Chanam Sandrok, under Keirao Assembly Constituency in Imphal East district, has been in the news lately for issues concerning immigrants.
Recently, it was reported that names of four persons from Mizoram were found listed in the voters' list of Chanam Sandrok polling station after they were enrolled as local residents in the 2011 census.
Even though their names were "removed" from the voters' list, their names once again came up in the list of potential beneficiaries of PMJAY (Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana) .
Later, it was also reported that two names believed to be of immigrants were found enrolled as co-workers under a MGNREGA (Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act) scheme from Chanam Sandrok.
Meanwhile, Irengbam Indrajit said the village has taken a resolution that prohibits selling land to "outsiders" and the LAHAVIDA is taking up steps to effect the same.
He, however, claimed that "the report that the persons have also been found given job cards is not true" .
Further, Arambai Tenggol group handing over former Pradhan Heirom Suresh and one Irengbam Dhabalo to the police in connection with the case seems to be "politically motivated" as the former (H Suresh) is preparing to face Zilla Parishad elections, Indrajit said.
"Works related to census, enrolment of voters, PMJAY health card and job cards are all done and provided by the Government authorities.
H Suresh has no involvement," he said.
Urging all not to create unwanted situations at Chanam Sandrok village, Indrajit said he doesn't wish to get involved in further arguments through the media.
