No power in 30 pc of schools, student tuition-dependent: Survey

Despite the initiative of the Central government to promote digital India as well as the importance of digital infrastructure in this modern era, 30.5 per cent of the total schools in the state do not have electric connection, according to the Annual Status of Education Report (ASER) 2022.The Annual Status of Education Report (ASER) 2022 is a nationwide citizen-led household survey that provides a snapshot of children's schooling and learning in rural India.
ASER 2022 reached almost all rural districts of India, and generated district, state and national level estimates of children's enrolment status and foundational skills.
Information about enrolment in school or pre-school was collected for all children aged 3-16, and children aged 5-16 were tested one-on-one to understand their reading, arithmetic and English skills.
According to the report published on Wednesday, only 69.5 per cent of schools have electric connection, which is a slight increase from the ASER 2018, which reported electric connection in 55.6 per cent of the schools.
At the same time, 81.1 per cent of the total schools do not have computer available for students.
Out of the remaining 28.9 per cent with computers, students were seen using computer in only 3.1 per Cent.
There is no toilet facility in 11.6 per cent of schools while 29.9 per cent of the schools were found with toilet facility in unusable state.
Usable toilets were found in only 58.5 per cent schools.
In 53.4 per cent of schools, there are no separate provision for girls' toilet while 11.5 per cent of schools have separate provision but found locked, and 8.1 per cent of schools which have separate provision were found unlocked but unusable.
Separate and unlocked usable toilet provision was found only in 27 per cent of the schools.
At the same time, 85.1 per cent of the schools do not have facility for drinking water and 5.2 per cent of schools have facility but no water is available while only 9.7 per cent of schools have drinking water available.
There is no library in 85.3 per cent of the total schools.
On the other hand, 53.4 per cent of students reading in class 1 to 8 were found taking paid private tuition, and this shows the emerging trend of taking private tuition right from young age in the state.
Number of students taking private tuition is higher among students of private schools (59.4 per cent) than those of government schools (41.9 per cent) .
