Imphal, January 19 2023:
A newly settled community in Lamlongei area has allegedly issued notice directing payment of house taxes following which the original settlers have demanded an immediate apology and warned that any unwanted incident arising out of the issue shall be the sole responsibility of the new settlers.
Addressing media persons in this regard at Lamlongei community hall on Thursday, Lamlongei Lamjing Lamtak Lup secretary Nongthombam Shyam informed that one Vaiphei Veng Welfare Committee of the newly settled community in Lamlongei area circulated notice demanding house rent, taxes on newly constructed buildings and submission of land documents from the original settlers of Lamlongei village number 7.Consequent to circulation of the notice, an emergency public meeting was held at Lamlongei and attempts made to meet and negotiate with the newly settled community and ease the tension arising out of the notice.
However, no concrete understanding could be brought about, he added.
Maintaining that such act of the new settlers is uncalled for and has the potential to create communal discord, Shyam made it clear that no new community can change or alter the names of existing villages and that formation of new organisations has been banned in the area.
If any individual or organisation is found acting against the verdict of the original settlers of Lamlongei, all unwanted incidents arising out would be their sole responsibility.
Demanding unconditional apology from Vaiphei Veng Welfare Committee, the Lup secretary warned that all roads in and around Lamlongei area would be blocked and entry and exit of the newly settled community prohibited in addition to enforcing restrictive measures.
He also said that the construction of houses illegally in the paddy fields would not be allowed and also appealed to the authority concerned to initiate process for eviction of the illegally constructed houses.
