Anal chiefs ban poppy cultivation

Kakching, May 27 2022: Anallon Chiefs' Association (ALCA), Chandel district has banned poppy cultivation in Anal areas of Chandel district along with cautioning that anyone found involved in such cultivation will be befittingly punished.

Addressing a press meet at Riverlane community hall, Chandel town on Friday, ALCA president KL John Motah stated that the decision was taken during its general assembly held on April 29.As a follow-up to resolution of the meeting, the Association has started checking whether poppy plantation is being carried out in areas belonging to Anal villages.

Anyone detected growing poppy in violation of the ban will face appropriate punishment under Anal customary law as well as law of the land, he emphasised.

KL John Motah also informed that ALCA executive members visited several Anal villages including on Indo-Myanmar border from April 7 to 22 during which it encountered that these villages were facing lack of infrastructure development.

Thus, ALCA appealed to the state government to develop the infrastructure of these villages at the earliest.

KL John continued that ALCA executive members toured five villages each in Sulam area and Green Hill Area-A, four in Green Hill Area-B, seven in Cana area, 12 in Western Valley area and 40 in Chakpi area.

The roadways connecting these villages with the Chandel district headquarters were found to be very poor condition.

The villagers are having hard time commuting on the said roads, he said and urged the government to develop the roadways connecting the villages as early as possible.

KL John also noted that though these villages have power connection, they are facing frequent power outages due to maintenance issues, especially after 2015 when landslides hit these areas.

These villages also do not have proper water supply as well as mobile network connections.

The press conference was also attended by ALCA vice president HL Monohring, general secretary Warhring Khumlo and finance secretary NL Bengam.
