Minister Letpao opens new Lokchao bridge

Though official inauguration ceremony is yet to be performed, tribal affairs & hills minister Letpao Haokip has made functional the newly constructed 185-metre long RCC bridge at Lokchao thong Imphal-Moreh NH-2 road with effect from Friday morning, thereby allowing vehicular traffic across the bridge.
According to Letpao, the bridge located 21km from Tengnoupal district headquarters has been made functional as condition of the old Lokchao bridge worsened and posed threat to vehicle operators.
He also said that official inauguration of the new bridge will be made by Union Road Transport and Highway minister Nitin Gadkari.
Letpao Haokip further said that he had inspected site for construction of a memorial complex in honour of Kuki people of Tengnoupal who fought against the British when the colonial'force came from Burma to attack Manipur.
The inspection was made under the supervision of chief minister N Biren as the fight between the Kukis and the British in Tengnoupal could be part of the Khongjom War.
The memorial complex will be completed before next year's Khongjom Day observance, he added.
The Lokchao bridge opening function was also attended by village chiefs, community leaders and leaders of civil society organisations.
Vehicles plying between Imphal and Moreh have started using the new Lokchao bridge constructed with fund from the Public Works Department (PWD) .
