127 killed, 663 injured in 432 road accidents in state

Manipur recorded decrease in road accident fatalities in 2020 as compared with the past years.
Out df the total.432 road accidents, the state recorded 127 fatalities and 663 injuries.
However, severity of road accidents saw a slight jump in 2020.As per report 'Road Accident in India - 2020' released by the ministry of road transport and highways, fatality was lower in 2020 as compared with the three preceding years.
In 2017, 136 people were killed and 1027 got injured in 578 road accidents.
In 2018, 134 people were killed and 1042 injured in 601 road accidents.
While in 2019, 156 people were killed and 1055 injured in 672 cases.
In term of number of accidents, the state recorded 112 fatal accidents in 2020.However, severity of road accidents (road accident deaths per 100 accidents) saw increase in 2020 as compared to the three preceding years.
The state recorded 23.5 per cent severity of accidents in 2017, 22.3 per cent in 2018, 23.2 per cent in 2019 and 29.4 per cent in 2020 placing the state in 24th rank among the states and UTs.
The state recorded 273 road accidents on national highways; killing 90 persons and injuring 401, and 106 road accidents on slate highways with 16 deaths and 176 injuries.
Maximum of the road ac cidents occurred on straight roads (341 incidents) followed by curved road (22), bridge (16), ongoing road works/under construction (5), culvert (3), steep grade (3), and potholes (2) .
On an all-India average, the fatal road accident victims largely constitute young people in the productive age groups for the third consecutive year in 2020.Young adults in the age group of 18 - 45 years accounted for 69 per cent of victims during 2020 .
People in the working age group of 18-60 years make up 87.4 per cent of total road accident fatalities.
Mention may be made here that there was nationwide lockdown in large part of 2020 due to Covid-19 pandemic.
Considering the fact that Manipur also had strict lockdown in 2020, the number of road accidents registered during the year could not be regarded as low.
