Cooking gas-kitchen link likely from 2024

Just as in some states of the country, supply of cooking gas directly to kitchens through Natural Gas Pipeline might begin in the state by the year 2024.Chief minister N Biren chaired a meeting in this regard at CM secretariat here on Friday and discussed about the project with representatives of Indraprastha Gas Limited.
The discussion on launch of the project in greater Imphal area and introduction of compressed natural gas (CNG) vehicles in the state was also attended by CAD & PD minister L Susindro Meitei and chief secretary Dr Rajesh Kumar.
Informing about details of the meeting, minister Susindro said that Natural Gas Pipeline project will begin very soon and target for the first phase of the project is to supply cooking gas to every household in greater Imphal area by the year 2024.The LPG pipeline will be from Dimapur in Nagaland and there will be outlets at Senapati and Kangpokpi district headquarters for supply of cooking gas in the two districts on the way.
In the second phase, the project will be taken up in all district headquarters of the state, he said.
According to Susindro, the main objective of Natural Gas Pipeline and CNG project is to reduce deforestation and ease the difficulties faced by consumers in procuring refilled LPG cylinder.
He also said that introducing household ga's connection through pipeline will reduce cost of cooking gas consumption and it will benefit bakery units immensely.
The government could even set up power plant if the state has Natural Gas Pipeline, he said, adding that the state government may plan about establishing power plant in due course of time.
The CAF & PD minister also said that the state government will bear 30 percent of the entire cost of the project while the remaining 70 percent by Indraprastha Gas Limited.
Laying of LPG pipeline will begin prior to concrete road project worth Rs 3000 crore to be taken up in Imphal area.
The pipeline will be laid at one metre depth and there will be stations at different places, he added.
According to Susindro, CAF & PD department will sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on behalf of Manipur government with Indraprastha Gas Limited but a thorough discussion in this regard will be held in the next state cabinet meet.
