Jessami, Meluri resolve border dispute amicably

In a landmark move, Jessami village in Manipur and Meluri village in Nagaland finally brought an amicable solution to the long-running inter-village boundary dispute.
In a joint press statement, Jessami Village Council (JVC) chairman Anizote Mekhrisuh and Meluri Village Council (MVC) chairman Tsirhutho Pochury informed that through concerted efforts of the village elders for peaceful co-existence, the two villages finally, settled the age-old boundary issue and subsequently erected permanent boundary pillars along with GPS points on November 23, 2021 .
The two village leaders further informed that the final settlement was brought after many rounds of talk and spot verifications conducted by the two sides in the interest of peaceful coexistence.
It is learnt that prior to execution of the final settlement, consensus on resolving the land dispute was already reached between the two villages earlier on August 25, 2021, according to a settlement inked between the two villages.
The two neighbouring villages in the border region of Manipur and Nagaland had had the boundary dispute since time immemorial.
In the past, leaders of two villages, leaders of civil society organisations, competent authorities had made several attempts to resolve the dispute during the British period and after the Independence of India, before and after the Statehood of Manipur and Nagaland but had failed to bring an amicable solution, it said.
The two sides renewed their efforts to bring a permanent solution on the basis of mutual consent and agreement of the two villages.
"Hence, the two villages appointed their respective village representatives led by both the Village Council chairmen to resolve the long-pending boundary dispute.
Accordingly, after holding a series of meetings followed by survey of the land areas, the dispute between the two villages was resolved and a total of 15 boundary pillars were laid along with GPS points," it added.
