CPI demands repeal of AFSPA from northeast

Imphal, December 07 2021:
Strongly condemning the brutal killing of civilians by Assam Rifles in Mon district of Nagaland, Communist Party of India-Manipur State Council (CPI-MSC) has demanded repeal of the Armed Forces' Special Powers Act (AFSPA) from the northeast states.
On Tuesday, CPI-MSC convened a meeting in connection with the incident that took place in Nagaland, at its office.
During the meeting, it was pointed out that the party had been advocating for repeal of AFSPA from Manipur for a long time.
CPI MLAs during the time of previous government under the then CM O Ibobi Singh had threatened to withdraw support from the government if AFSPA was not revoked from the state, in the aftermath of the brutal rape and murder of Thangjam Manorama by Assam Rifles.
Consequently, the then Congress government repealed AFSPA from 7 assembly segments in Greater Imphal Area.
Under the protection of this draconian Act, security forces along with paramilitary personnel have been committing atrocities after atrocities upon the people of north eastern states and Jammu & Kashmir.
Many young people especially men have lost their lives in fake encounters.
The case of the prolonged violation of human rights is now being heard in the Supreme Court.
Amidst this, putting the blame on poor intelligence, Assam Rifles personnel gunned down innocent coal miners who were returning from work at Oting village in Mon district.
Nagaland on December 4.Such incidents occurring due to "shoddy intelligence" is the not the first of its kind to happen in the north east region.
Thus, both the PM and the union home minister should take responsibility and resign from their respective posts, the party stated and demanded repeal of the draconian Act to prevent a repeat of the same in the future.
