Imphal, June 08 2023:
As the present Chief Minister N Biren-led state government seems almost non-existent, it is hard to know who is exactly at the helm of affairs in the state, Janata Dal (United) Manipur State Unit has remarked.
Addressing a press meet at his Kabo Leikai residence on Thursday, JD(U) Manipur president Kshetriinayum Bi-ren Singh said that Union home minister Amit Shah, during his visit to the state, assured to solve the prevail-ing issue in Manipur.
How-ever, after his return, Kuki militants are continuing to attack civilians and setting houses on fire unabated, which is highly contradic-tory to his assurances.
Nonetheless, the party has submitted a memorandum mentioning the demands of the people to the union home minister through state's se-curity advisor Kuldiep Singh.
JD(U) Manipur senior vice president Dr Nimaichand Lu-wang, who also attended the press meet, said that during such a tense situation, the CM seems to be put under house arrest and it is un-known whether state govern-ment or the administrators despatched by the centre is running the state.
He then conveyed the demands mentioned in the memorandum submitted to the union home minister, which include the failure of the 44,000-45000 central forces deployed to the state to curb the violence; withdrawal of SoO agreement with Kuki militants and strict action against the violators of the ground rules; deployment of adequate security in the foothill areas; and restoring peace and normalcy in the state.
Party vice president Dr Kh Loken said that it is un-becoming of any leader to watch his people suffer from violence.
The government has failed to curb the ongoing violence or restore peace and normalcy in the state.
Thus, the memorandum also urged for opening up the blockade on the national highway and ensuring delivery of resettle-ment package to those dis-placed and staying in relief and rehabilitation centres as soon as possible.
Joining the media brief-ing, JD-U spokesman Sam-uel Jendai remarked that the state government is unable to maintain the law and order in the state, while also failing to restore peace and harmony.
The people have lost their trust on the government.
Thus, it is best for CM Biren to resign from his seat, he said, while adding that the party is apprising the union home minister on failures of the ruling government.
