Imphal, February 16 2023:
It is not the people from outside Manipur who are polluting Nambul river but the natives themselves.
However, despite the many efforts made to clean the river, unbated dumping of garbage into the river has failed to change the status quo.
Thus, people should understand that we alone are responsible for keeping our courtyard clean, not others, Sagolband AC MLA RK Imo remarked.
The Directorate of Environment and Climate Change under the Nambul River Rejuvenation programme distributed dustbins to the people of IMC Ward no 19 in a simple function held at Wahengbam Leikai Lairembi Community Hall on Thursday.
Speaking as chief guest of the event, RK Imo lamented that it is difficult to maintain cleanliness of Nambul fiver due to frequent dumping of garbage.
He then said that all us have the responsibility to realise CM Biren's campaign for cleanliness in Imphal city and also in connection with the upcoming G20 events.
He suggested the need on the part of garbage collectors to go and collect garbage once-twice a week.
He also warned that FIR could be registered against those garbage collectors who failed to collect the garbage in time.
As the river flows through the constituency the people should cultivate the habit of proper disposal of garbage i.e., into the dustbin, he suggested.
In his speech, Directorate of Environment and Climate Change joint director T Brajakumar recounted that people used to bath in Nambul river in olden times but now, barely anyone can no near the river.
Thus, the Directorate has taken up many measures to save the river and restore it to its original state, he said while emphasising the people's role in this regard as well.
The joint director continued that it is normal for a household to generate some garbage.
However, people must refrain from dumping the garbage carelessly on the road.
Imphal City is the face of Manipur, and so it is everyone's responsibility to maintain cleanliness in Imphal City, he added.
The programme was also attended by IMC Ward no 7 ex-corporator RK Jiten and IMC Ward No.8 can didate Sivananda Sharma, among others.
