Imphal, February 16 2023:
Refuting the allegations of police atrocity on the family of Ningthoujam Popilal raised by Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) , SP Imphal West Ksh Shivakanta has clarified that police simply carried out their duties acting on a complaint and there was no brutality carried out by the police team.
In a statement issued Thursday, the SP informed that on February 9 evening, a complaint of cognizable and non-bailable offence allegedly committed by N Popilal and others was received at Lamphel Police Station.
Accordingly, an FIR was registered and a police team went to Popilal's residence at Phayeng for further investigation.
However, he was not found at his place when the police team reached there.
Thereafter, the police team left the spot.
All formal procedures were strictly followed as laid down in CrPC and the question of police brutality as alleged is totally out of the picture.
As for the involvement of Popilal, it is still an ongoing investigation and his guilt or innocence will be established only after the investigation is completed.
The police were performing their assigned duties, the SP said and added that the death of the elderly lady is in no way connected with act of police.
The linking of an investigation of a police case and the death of Popilal's grandmother is incorrect, uncalled for and unfortunate, the police officer added.
