Imphal, February 16 2023:
With lesser number of migratory birds visiting Manipur this winter, fewer species of ducks are sighted at Loktak Lake.
Compared to previous years, the number and species of wild ducks (Lam Nganu) in the Lake has reduced significantly, said Indian Bird Conservation Network (IBCN) State Coordinator RK Birjit.
Speaking to The Sangai Express, RK Birjit said a bird counting mission was carried out across 50 locations in and around the Loktak Lake on February 5 .
During the counting, the ducks are majorly seen at the Birahari Pat and Keibul Lamjao National Park area of the Loktak Lake.
In all the other areas the birds are observed sparsely.

The most sighted birds (duck) were the Coot (Porom) and the Lesser Whistling Duck (Tingi) while less sighted birds include the Northern Pintail, Red Crested Pochard, Gadwall and Greater Scaup.
The reason for the dwindling number of birds may be attributed to human encroachment.
The last 20 years recorded 21 species of ducks in the Lake, said RK Birjit.
Meanwhile, the reported sighting of the rare Mandarin Duck (Sana Nganu) at Lamphelpat this year is good news.
There was a report of the Mandarin duck sighting at Loktak Lake's Toubul Thaga area in 2013 .
While this bird is rare in Manipur, it is reared and bred at home in some other countries.
The bird is listed under the IUCN's least concern category.
Environmentalist Dr Kh Shamungou said the Mandarin duck is rarely sighted in Manipur.
Earlier, this year, sightings of the bird were reported from Arunachal Pradesh and Assam.
The bird visiting has adorned Lamphelpat and it is a good sign, he said.
Notably, during the Assembly Session recently, the Government had informed that the Government is planning a project worth Rs 650 crore with the funding of the New Development Bank to build a water body at Lamphelpat.
