Jiribam, March 11 2022:
Day after the results of the election to the 12th Manipur Legislative Assembly were declaimed, post-poll violence gripped Jiribam district on Friday with outbreak of vandalism and burning of vehicles leaving several people injured.
On Friday morning, a group of people, who are suspected to be supporters of JD-U candidate MLA Md Ashab Uddin, assaulted Imphal West BJP Minority Morcha vice-president Md Saddam and his family members at their house located at Lalpani, Jiribam.
Along with Saddam, his father Md Makram Ali (58), mother Nagurun Nesha (52) and wife Abeda Begum were also injured in the assault.
His wife Abeda Begum sustained internal injuries and was shifted to Silchar for CT scan examination.
Interacting with the media at the district hospital, where he is undergoing treatment, Md Saddam said that around 50 supporters of JD-U candidate Ashab Uddin carried out a victory procession on Friday around 8.30 pm and they indiscriminately lobbed fire crackers towards his house.
He told them to celebrate outside but not to throw the fire crackers inside his property.
In response, the mob barged in and assaulted him and his family members, he alleged.
He soon informed police but they did not arrive for more than one hour.
Asking if it was wrong to support a Meetei candidate in the election, he strongly condemned the JD-U supporters for their violent action.
Later, large number of women protesters came out and staged protest in front of Jiribam police station while condemning assault on women.
The protesting women along with Saddam's father had a talk with the police and the latter assured of arresting those involved in the assault.
From there, the women protesters went to storm the house of a JD-U supporter named Moirangthem Promen at Dibong Awang Leikai.
Despite resistance from police, the agitated women vandalised Promen's shop and burned a Royal Enfield motorcycle.
The protesters also pelted stones towards his house but police dispersed the mob.
From there, they carried out a rally but police stopped them by firing tear gas shells.
There is no report of any injuries in the incident.
