Students demand withdrawal of BSF from college campus

Imphal, August 07 2026: Students of Liberal College staged a protest today against the stationing of Border Security Force (BSF) personnel on the college campus at Luwangsangbam in Imphal East and announced that they would shut down the institution until the security personnel are withdrawn.

During the protest, the students locked the administrative block, the main gate, and the second gate of the college, demanding that the BSF personnel be removed so they could continue their studies without disruption.

The protest began at around 11.20 am, with students raising slogans at the site where the BSF personnel was stationed.

Alleging militarisation of the college campus, the students said they locked the administrative block, as well as the first and second gates of the college as their repeated demands to withdraw the BSF personnel remains unheeded.

The protesting students also submitted a memorandum to the BSF personnel stationed at the college campus.

Later, at around 12.30 pm, a team of Heingang police arrived at the college and held discussions with the students.

Speaking to the media, Liberal College Students' Union general secretary Soibam Purnachand said that they strongly condemn the presence of security personnel at the college campus like a military camp.

Saying that they had submitted multiple memorandums to the Imphal East Deputy Commissioner and other concerned authorities seeking the withdrawal of the BSF personnel, he added that their demand, however, remains unaddressed.

He said that the college would remain shut until the security personnel are withdrawn.

He also warned that they may prevent the college from being used as a centre for graduation examinations if their demand is not addressed.

Laishram Silky, a student, said that the area where the BSF personnel are stationed is close to the second gate, which is mostly used by Science students. She said some BSF personnel had asked students not to pass through the area where they were stationed.

Stating that the presence of BSF personnel on the college campus made female students feel uneasy, she added that students from distant places are unable to stay in the college hostel and attend classes regularly.

She urged the Government to withdraw the BSF personnel.

Placards bearing slogans such as "Withdraw the BSF" and "College hostel is a home for students, not a military camp" were displayed during the protest.
