JDU readies for polls, likely to field ex-MLAs/ministers

Imphal, July 11 2021: As the term of the present government is set to end early next year, Janata Dal United (JDU) Manipur has started preparing for the upcoming state assembly election with JDU Manipur in-charge Ram-preet Mandal also scheduled to visit the state soon to assess preparedness for the polls.

Informing this during a press meet on Sunday, JDU state unit spokesperson Maisnam Dorendro said that the party will field candidates in both hills and valley assembly constituencies and some ex-ministers and ex-MLAs are also among the list of probable party candidates.

Union minister for steel Ramchandra Prasad Singh would be visiting Imphal soon and strategies for fighting the election will be discussed during his visit, Dorendro revealed, while also expressing his belief that the party will be able to win minimum of 15 seats in the assembly election.

On the other hand, the party's Manipur in-charge Rampreet Mandal would also be arriving here on July 23 and will meet the ex-ministers and ex-MLAs who would be contesting the election on the party's ticket.

Union minister Ramchandra's visit was scheduled for May 1 but postponed due to the prevailing Covid situation and he will visit after the parliament session.

He further said that Shiv Sena Manipur unit team led by its president M Tombi approached the party leaders in the national capital with the proposal of merging with the party on the condition that he is appointed as the JDU state president.

However, the party leadership in the national capital had reportedly told him that he is welcome to merge with JDU but without any precondition.

The Shiv Sena team are still in Delhi, Dorendro informed.

On the other hand, a JDU Manipur unit team led by its president Hangkhanpao Thuite is in Delhi celebrating the appointment of Ramchandra Prasad as the new union minister for steel.

Ramchandra is a former IAS officer of UP cadre and he had served at the level of principal secretary under the Nitish Kumar government in Bihar in 1984.He resigned from his job in 2010 and joined politics, he said.

Dorendro also congratulated Dr RK Ranjan on his induction as minister of state in two important ministries of the Modi government.

JDU Manipur senior vice-president Lengjalet Haokip, vice-president Mandal Singh, intending candidate from Khurai AC T Lokendrajit, state coordinator M Surjit and Imphal East district president Nongpoknganba were also present at the press meet.
