Kangpokpi, March 17 2022:
Villagers of Kangchup Makhom in Kangpokpi district have been witnessing a fire from subsurface near the vicinity of the village since March 13 .
According to the villagers, the flame was first spotted at Thangminlal Neishiel's field on March 13 .
The villagers have been apprehensive of the fire which is presumably a biomass ignition as it could endanger livestock, standing crops and inhabitants of the surrounding areas.
In this regard, chief of Kangchup Makhom, Jangkhokam Lotzem has submitted a letter to SDO Kangchup Geljang drawing attention of the Government and authorities concerned for immediate intervention.
The village chief urged the Government and authorities concerned to let the Geological Survey of India survey the area and provide accurate information on the possible reason of the ground fire.
He also urged Government to direct the fire brigade to cordon off the affected area to prevent further spread of the fire and assess the damage caused by the fire, and accordingly provide compensation to the affected landowners.
Meanwhile, SDO Kangchup Geljang has informed that he has received the letter of Kangchup Makhom's chief and will initiate necessary action after the spot inspection.
