Imphal, February 09 2023:
As a 'special mention' in the ongoing Parliament session, Rajya Sabha MP Leishemba Sanajaoba raised the demand for allowing UPSC candidates appearing in Manipuri Literature optional papers in both Bengali script and Meetei Mayek, on Wednesday MP Sanajaoba informed the House that in the UPSC conducted civil service examination there are two optional papers in Manipuri Literature carrying 250 marks each.
As a state policy since 2006, Meetei Mayek (indigenous script) has replaced Bengali script in a phased manner.
After students studied Meetei Mayek in place of Bengali script, colleges and universities in Manipur are now producing students of BA and MA who have been taught in Meetei Mayek only.
However, these students are not able to appear in the UPSC conducted civil service examinations for Manipuri Literature op tional papers in Meetei Mayek and are being deprived of the facility as they are not versed in Bengali script anymore, he explained.
Informing the House that the students of Manipur are demanding for allowing them to appear in the exam in Meetei Mayek which is a valid demand, MP Sanajaoba said that the state is facing serious issues in this regard and therefore there is the need to change the instruction written in the question papers of Manipuri Literature, from -"Answer must be written in Manipuri (Bengali)", to "Answer must be written in Manipuri (Bengali or Meetei Mayek) and enable Manipuri students to appear in the said exam.
