Sugnu police nabs five with 1435 bags of urea

A team of Sugnu police station led by its officer in-charge apprehended five truck drivers, who were caught red handed trying to smuggle 1435 bags of urea across the Indo-Myanmar border, along the bank of Imphal river near Serou Ningthem village on Thursday.
According to a police report, on receiving reliable input about some trucks illegally transporting urea from Churachandpur to Molchom village located close to Indo-Myanmar border on Wednesday, a team of Sugnu PS was deployed from lam to 3am on Thursday and the 5 trucks were intercepted along the bank of Imphal river at Serou.
The trucks were transporting a total of 1435 bags of urea.
The five drivers have been identified as Laminjohn Mate (22) s/o Jangkhongam Mate of Thinghangjang Village, Ngamkhohao Haokip (32) s/o Jankmang Haokip of Govajang Village, Manglunlal Zou (30) s/o Genlamthang Zou of Singngat Village, Ginneilal Zou (27) s/o Khamzalian Zou of Aina Village, and Seigoulun Baite (22) s/o Paokai Baite of P Gamnomjang Village.
Laminjohn Mate was driving the Tata truck (NL 111514) carrying a total of 270 bags of urea, Ngamkhohao Haokip (MN 01 9394) carrying a total of 300 bags, Manglunlal Zou (MN 02 5636) carrying a total of 310 bags, Ginneilal Zou (MN 07 3751) carrying a total of 280 bags while Seigoulun Baite was the driver of Tata truck (MN 06T 0289), which was found carrying a total of 275 bags of urea.
Upon receipt of credible information from various inputs of huge quantity of urea fertilizers being smuggled to Myanmar from the Churachandpur district, a team of the Sugnu police station led by its Officer in Charge intercepted goods laden trucks, said a police source, adding that on checking of the trucks' load a total of 1,435 bags of fertilizer urea, each weighing 50 kg were recovered.
The total value of the seizure is estimated at Rs 5, 17, 500 in the local market.
The drivers were unable to produce valid documents to justify the transportation of the goods, the police said.
Further investigation is under way to unearth all those involved in the case, the police said.
The arrested drivers all from the Churachandpur district of Manipur, seized items, and impounded trucks are now in police custody for further investigations.
As the Indo-Myanmar border trade at Moreh has been closed since March 10, 2021, all the export consignments are being closely monitored, the police added.
It is pertinent to mention that Indian-manufactured urea fertil -izer is in high demand in Myanmar for the upcoming paddy sowing season.
