In continuation of their ongoing democratic protest against the Cabinet decision to legalise alcohol, Coalition Against Drugs & Alcohol (CADA) in association with local womens' groups staged sit-in protests at Itham under Imphal East district and Kwakta under Bishnupur district today.
According to a statement issued by Geetchandra Mangang, secretary general, CADA, All Manipur Women's Social Reformation & Development Samaj (Nupi Samaj), Itham Thumkhong Lairembi Meira Paibi Lup and CADA jointly staged a sit-in protest at Thumkhong Lairembi Imagi Shanglen, Itham today.
Speaking by the sideline of the protest, Thokchom Ramani, president Nupi Samaj stated that instead of prohibiting alcohol, the Government wants to issue licenses for sale of alcohol and this is akin to pushing the people into the jaws of death.
Separately, All Manipur Women's Social Reformation and Development Samaj (NUPI SAMAJ), Kwakta Santhong Women's Welfare Association and CADA organised a sit-in protest at Kwakta Khunou Santhong Bazar today.
The protestors at both sites raised slogans demanding revocation of alcohol legalisation and called upon the State Government to save the people from widespread alcohol abuse and its ramifications.
