Imphal, May 07 2014:
Surprise over the prevailing condition, Governor VK Duggal on Wednesday assured to renovate the three Khwairamband Ima markets here during his maiden inspection visit to the biggest market complex of Manipur.
On the sidelines of the visit, Duggal told reporters that he was taken by surprise to learn that no steps have been taken up by the State Government to revamp and properly maintain the world famous all women market complex after it was inaugurated by AICC president Sonia Gandhi on November 12, 2010 .
After seeing the present condition of the three all-women markets which have become paler, the Governor also showed amazement on learning that the upper floors of the markets are still lying vacant.

During a brief meeting with a number of women vendors, Duggal compassionately listened to their complaints that they have not been able to make much profit from their daily business activities due to pucca walls erected on all sides of the markets.
While explaining that these high walls create a problem to shoppers thereby affecting their sale proceeds, the aggrieved women vendors urged the Governor to dismantle all the walls surrounding the three markets.
Most shoppers do not want to buy things from vendors seated in the interior corners of the markets because of the walls, they pointed out.
The Governor assured the women vendors that he would take up the matter with the State Government soon.
He further assured the women vendors that a fresh painting work will be taken up in the market complex and all the old electric bulbs and tubes would be changed by new ones by May 16.All the drains in the complex would also be cleaned up and dustbins would be kept at proper sites to beautify the three markets, the Governor promised.
The women vendors later presented simple gifts to Duggal during the visit.
Members of Kanglei Economic Development Organisation (KEDO) also received the Governor with warm welcome.
During the visit the Governor was accompanied by Geetkumar, Chief, Town Planning; A Nimai Sharma, Chairperson, Imphal Municipal Council (IMC) and other officials of the council.
