Imphal, May 07 2014:
While a few hours of heavy downpour from the early hours of today led to flow of water in some rivers, a strong wind caused substantial devastation in Chilchil village under Saparmeina PS.
Compared to the rainfall providing huge relief to the people in the valley areas where acute shortage of potable water had been lingering for weeks, a reliable source said a sudden gush of strong wind accompanied by heavy rainfall swept through Chilchil village and nearby areas in the wee hours of today.
Apart from uprooting trees and snapping electric poles the windstorm that reportedly intensified at around 3.30 am caused damage to many buildings, including a CRPF camp in Chilchil village which is situated near Leikhampokpi village in Senapati district along the National Highway-2.The early morning rainfall, nevertheless, brought relief to residents in the valley areas, particularly in the twin capital districts as people left the comfort of their beds to collect rainwater through dawn.
River beds where cracks were visible at various points in the past few weeks finally had water flowing in it.
In Imphal East district, the Iril river has started to flow raising hope for the Porompat Water Supply scheme to resume distribution of treated water.
However, the water level at the Top Khongnangkhong point is yet to reach the mark from where water could be pumped to the treatment plant.
Owing to the rainfall water started to flow in Imphal and Nambul rivers.
Due to delay in arrival of the rain, the Nambul river was clogged with waste dumped by the residents.
