No fuel shortage

Imphal, January 25 2013: Even though petroleum products like petrol, diesel, kerosene and LPG could not be shipped in adequately in the past two weeks or so, the question of whether the State would face shortage of these products or not can be determined only on Monday or Tuesday.

As of now, there is no shortage of fuel.

However, even though IOC has been supplying petrol and diesel at the normal rate, most of the oil pumps in Imphal remained closed in the past two/three days.

The average daily requirement of petrol and diesel in the State are 90 Kls and 220 Kls respectively.

Based on these estimates, IOC today supplied 88 Kls of petrol and 198 Kls of diesel to retail outlets.

The same quantities of petrol and diesel were supplied to ROs yesterday too.

Petroleum products could not be transported into the State for several days due to imposition of blockade at Jakhama, Nagaland along NH 2 following a mishap involving a Manipur bound truck in which one person was killed and two others injured.

This was followed by ATSUM's 24 hour bandh which paralysed movement of vehicles along National Highways, and now the Kuki State Demand Committee (KSDC) has reimposed the public blockade thereby putting a halt to shipment of petroleum products.

According to an official of Imphal IOC office, following the Jakhama incident, CRPF convoy went for shipment of petroleum products only once.

It is clear that no CRPF convoy would go for shipment of petroleum products tomorrow but it is still undecided whether the convoy would go or not on January 27 .

Nonetheless, standing TTs have been allowed to unload at the Chingmeirong depot and fuel is being allotted to retail outlets at the normal rate after calculating the average daily requirements.

This system of supplying fuel based on the average daily requirements was introduced after the Jakhama incident with a view to avoid acute shortage of these commodities in the event of extension or imposition of any bandh or blockade, informed the official.
