National Voters' Day observed

Imphal, January 25 2013:
As in other parts of the country, the 3rd National Voters' Day was observed under the aegis of Chief Electoral Officer at GM Hall here today and administered National Voters' Day pledge to the people.
Ten newly enrolled voters were felicitated on the occasion which also distribution of prizes among the winners of the essay and quiz competitions held earlier in connection with the observance of the day by the State Election Department.
Speaking on the occasion, Additional Chief Secretary PC Lawmkunga, who attended the observance as Chief Guest, said that National Voters' Day is the most important day for all the electorates in the State as well since it is 'we who have given the right to choose the our best representatives to govern us' .
He recalled that the National Voters' Day was observed for the first time on this day in India in 2011 following instruction from the Election Commission of India for spreading awareness among the voters in the country on their duties and responsibilities.
Since then, January 25 every year is being observed as National Voters' Day all across the country.
Lawmkunga maintained that the latest Photo Electoral Rolls which was released recently is one of the best so far.
Now, no individual can exercise double voting in any part of the country or within the State and any discrepancy can be detected in advance and the problem can be solved.
Y Rameshchandrta, State Election Commissioner, who was also present on the occasion as Guest of Honour, observed that as compared to last year, this year's National Voters' Day observance was more fruitful as the number of participants this time was much higher.
This is because of the fact that the people of the State have come to realize the importance of their voting rights and the values associated with it.
Presided over by O Nabakishore, Chief Electoral Officer, the function was also attended by L Pravin, Joint Chief Electoral Officer as one of the presidium members.
