Imphal, January 21 2023: Manipur on Saturday celebrated its 51st Statehood Day at the 1st Battalion Manipur Rifles Parade Ground, here, with chief minister N Biren attending as chief guest.

The main highlight of the celebration was the CM receiving general salute and inspecting the march past parade by 14 contingents and performance of combined band.

Greeting the people of the state on the occasion, Biren recalled the history of Manipur and stressed on the need for the public to remember every memorable event that occurred in the history.

He mentioned about Chahi Taret Khutakpa, the hardship faced by the people during the period and the contribution of brave forefathers in liberating Manipur from the Burmese occupation.

"We all should honour the selfless and heroic contribution of the then great leaders," Biren said.

The CM also recalled the period of British colonialism and sacrifices made by brave sons of Manipur for defending the sovereignty of their motherland.

Reiterating that the present generation are the sons and daughters of those brave forefathers, who possessed the quality of conviction, commitment and sacrifice, he urged everyone to try to live with dignity by helping the needy and rendering service for the development of the state.

Speaking about the involvement of police personnel in drug trades and other anti-social activities, the CM asked the uniformed personnel to respect their uniform, the state, the nation and the people in order to earn their trust and respect.

One must remember that good deeds always earn good response.

He informed that the government will terminate the service of the five CDO personnel, who were arrested with a huge consignment of drugs from Pallel area.

Their service will not be revived at any cost and the government will ensure that they get befitting punishment.

The chief minister also thanked the DCs, SPs and DLOs for understanding the grievances of the people and addressing them through platforms like Meeyamgi Numit.

Further stating that peace is the foremost factor for bringing development and addressing the grievances of the public is one way of bringing peace in the society, he expressed elation that the government has been successful in bringing peace and tranquillity in the state, which further leads to moving forward.

While thanking the dedicated and sincere personnel of the law enforcement agencies of the state for their contribution in upholding law and order situation, the CM said that the government had already established Sagol police, tourism police and cycle patrol.

Among them, those in the tourism police units will be trained in different foreign languages including Japanese.

Such initiative will help in promoting tourism further in the state, he said.

Regarding the upcoming G20 events to be held in the state, he expressed confidence that such programmes will be a good opportunity to showcase the culture, tradition and tourism potential of the state.

Flagging concern over the large scale deforestation, mainly for illegal poppy cultivation, the CM told the gathering that the government will launch a large scale tree plantation programme just ahead of the monsoon season and urged the public to take part in this initiative.

He also asked the forest department to make necessary arrangements for the campaign and the horticulture and agriculture departments to provide possible support.

Biren appreciated Prime Minister Narendra Modi and other central leaders for their concern towards protecting the identity and culture of the state and fostering development in the state while maintaining that the law-and-order situation in the state has considerably improved and many members of UG groups have been brought to the mainstream through dialogues and interaction, under the initiative of the Central and state governments.

Lauding the contribution of the people working in different sectors in ensuring faster development of the state, he said that people of the state are representing the country in almost all the sectors including defence, information technology, sports and education among others.

However, the state is still lagging behind in higher education sector and his government is putting in every effort to bring quality education and develop the higher education sector.

He mentioned about the enhancement of MBBS seats, free coaching class for UPSC aspirants and re-introduction of the ILP System among other initiatives of his government.

Biren further said that Manipur, with its pace of development, has been able to attract many domestic and foreign tourists.

Many visitors have acknowledged the progress and development of the state.

The state will be holding events in connection with G20 and even the Grand Finale of Femina Miss India this year.
