WMC seeks Constitutional remedy

Imphal, September 09 2023:
Categorically stating that the root cause of what has been happening now in Manipur is the result of the extremely unequal Constitutional disposition that the Meeteis are meted out, the World Meetei Council (WMC) has urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to rectify the Constitutional disarrangement that has been the root cause of the crisis.
This can be done by including the Meetei in the list of Scheduled Tribe list without further delay, it asserted.
WMC held a meeting at Guwahati yesterday (September 8) and deliberated on the violent crisis besieging Manipur.
Meetei, since the enactment of the Constitution of India have been subtly reduced as strangers or second-class citizens in their own State.
Sadly, this has been done with the knowledge of the Meetei leaders who didn't have the wisdom of governance till today, according to a statement issued by the WMC.
"The violence that we are going through couldn't have happened if the Meetei were also rightful citizen rights in Manipur", it said.
A Myanmarese Chin-Kuki could come to Manipur and become a rightful citizen the next day in the name of ST.
This is possible due to the Constitutional disposition for which the Government of India and Government of Manipur are responsible, it said.
However, till today no Government - either the State or the Centre has taken notice of this gross injustice done to the Meetei.
The immigrant Chin-Kuki who started the violence have been asking for more and more at the cost of the indigenous people.
This is unacceptable, the WMC asserted.
The Centre should address the root cause of this disturbing trend in the larger interest of the Nation.
There can be no durable peace if justice is not given to the Meetei, it added.
