JNU Prof bats for peace-finding team

A two -day national youth convention organised by Manipur University Students' Union (MUSU) on the theme 'Democracy, dialogue and co-existence in Manipur' kicked off on Saturday at the Court hall of the varsity.
MU registrar professor W Chandbabu attended the inaugural session of the convention as chief guest while MUSU president Th Sonamani was present as president.
Manipur University Teachers' Association president professor Irom Gambhir and MU dean of students' welfare professor M Premjit were also present as guest of honour while professor Manindra Nath Thakur of JNU's Centre for Political Science spoke as special guest.
Speaking at the inaugural session of the convention, professor W Chandbabu observed that the convention is being held at a time when role of the youngsters is considered vital in bringing solution to the present conflict.
He said that participation of student leaders of different states and intellectuals and professors from universities would help in bringing a solution to the conflict.
In his speech, professor Manindra Nath Thakur said that peace-finding team need to be constituted apart from fact-finding regarding the violence in Manipur.
He said that role of intellectuals in a society is enormous and no intellectual should take side while resolving issues concerning a society.
It is necessary to constitute fact-finding team to find out root cause of violence like the present one in Manipur but constitution of fact-finding alone cannot bring solution, he said and stressed the need for constituting peace-finding team to end violence in Manipur.
According to professor Manindra, efforts must be made at the earliest to hold dialogue to end conflict in Manipur.
Further stressing the need for constitution of the African model Truth and Reconsiliation Commission in Manipur with more emphasis on social healing to bring solution to the present conflict, the professor said that intellectuals need to find out the right model of Truth and Reconsiliation Commission suited to local conditions.
