Imphal, October 22 2023:
Commemorating the day Manipur Rifles was raised on October 22, 1948, Leadership Council of Thang-ta Manipur (LCTT) celebrated the raising day of Manipur Rifles in a simple manner on Sunday.
In a release, LCTT convenor L Dhamendro Meitei recalled the formation of Manipur Levy to fight Burmese imperialism by King Gambhir Singh.
After Manipur was colonised by British, Manipur Levy was brought under the supervision of a political agent.
Later, it was renamed as Manipur Rifles.
Similarly, Cachar Levy started working as a military force after the promulgation of Assam Rifles Act, he informed.
He urged the state and central government to pass Manipur Rifles Act and make it a para military force/ regular army.
Putting historic Manipur Rifles under Assam Police Manual and deploying them mostly as security for VIP is akin to neglecting the military history of the state.
