Imphal, September 28 2023:
The women wing of Thawai Meerel has served a three day ultimatum to the Government to take action against the excesses of security forces in controlling students.
Speaking to the media at Singjamei Bheigyabati Leikai today, convenor of Thawai Meerel women's wing Th Sujata said that the response given by the Government to students who protested democratically against the murder of two Meetei teenagers was unjustifiable.
Saying that many students sustained grievous injury in the crowd control exercise while one is likely to amputate his hand, she urged the Chief Minister to take befitting action against the security forces who used brute force against the students.
Tens of thousands of people gathered at CM's Bungalow which is a silent zone when Chief Minister N Biren announced that he will resign but didn't allow the students to meet him, Sujata recalled and asked if there is any problem in letting the students meet the Chief Minister and air their grievances.
The students were in uniform and unarmed and they were simply protesting against the cold-blooded murder of the two Meetei students by the Kuki militants, she added.
Meanwhile, Sujata said that they met Security Advisor to the Government Kuldiep Singh and questioned the legality of using tear gas, rubber bullets as a first option in controlling mobs in Manipur.
She said that they initially tried to meet the team of CBI who landed in Manipur yesterday to probe the murder of Phijam Hemanjit and Hijam Linthoingambi but it wasn't permitted.
On the claim of BJP MLA KM Khaute of Churachandpur constituency that businessmen from the valley are also involved in poppy plantations, Sujata said that it is not only the Meeteis which live in the valley districts and so the BJP must respond to the allegation.
She also lauded celebrated actor RK Kaiku for resigning from the BJP over the failure of the Government to solve the problem in Manipur.
Media coordinator of Thawai Meeral Khomdram Mocha, on the other hand, said that the meira paibis which have been taking active part in the movement to protect the State's integrity have become a subject of criticism of Kukis, Indian Government and the State Government.
It's not the time for the political leaders to secure their chairs, he said and appealed to all MLAs to refrain from inviting a civil war by showing their disunity to the whole world.
