Emphasising the critical role of media in fostering societal development and peace, Home and Youth Affairs & Sports Minister Govindas Konthoujam called on journalists to make greater efforts in helping end the ongoing violence in the State.
He was speaking as the chief guest at the 9th Foundation Day of the All Bishnupur District Working Journalists Union (ABDWJU), held alongside a tree plantation drive ahead of World Environment Day.
Addressing the gathering, Govindas Konthoujam highlighted the media's role in strengthening the relationship between the government and the public.
"The media helps society develop by highlighting public needs to the government and government actions to the people, providing an opportunity to correct errors." he said.
He further noted that despite the widespread circulation of news through multiple channels, people still rely on credible media for authentic information.
"Media persons must ensure that public trust is not compromised," he added.
Speaking on climate change, the Minister warned that rising global temperatures have made life increasingly difficult.
"Human activities are destroying nature and ecology.
To save our environment, we must collectively assume responsibility for forest conservation and environmental protection," he said.
MLA Thongam Shanti, also present at the function, stressed the importance of unity and collective action for building a progressive, equitable, and peaceful society.
He underscored the responsibility of the media in fostering community harmony and mitigating social divisions.
ABDWJU president Yumnam Somananda Mangang highlighted the evolving role of media in society, noting that social media, while influential, must be complemented by authentic and credible journalism.
"Media has no friends or enemies; its duty is to deliver truthful information to the public," he said.
As part of the foundation day celebrations and World Environment Day observances, the chief guest and other dignitaries planted tree saplings at the proposed site of the Bishnupur Press Club in Ward No 6 of the Bishnupur Municipal Council.
