CCpur, September 28 2023:
Representatives of the Meetei Council Moreh, Meetei Society Churachandpur and Meitei Youth Organisation Churachandpur have submitted a joint memorandum to Chief Minister N Biren Singh to review the State's compensation policy for victims of the current violence, among others.
The joint memorandum which bears the signatures of Mayanglambam Thoiba Meetei, president Meetei Council Moreh and Moirangthem Thoiba Singh, president, Meetei Society Churachandpur and Meetei Society, Churachandpur was submitted on behalf of the Meitei community victims of May 3 Kuki attacks that occurred at Moreh in Tengnoupal district and 19 villages in Churachandpur district.
Laying down its demands, the joint memorandum has urged the Government of Manipur to immediately start preparations to rehabilitate and resettle Meitei victims of Moreh and Churachandpur at their original place of birth and residence.
It has also demanded the State Government to conduct an authentic assessment of the damages caused to the properties and assets of the Meitei victims of the two districts and appoint a "victims property damage assessing authority" to determine and estimate losses caused by the violence.
Further, it has urged the Government to re-fix the amount of victim's "house compensation" at the actual value of damage/destruction caused to a victim's house/property.
Lastly, the joint memorandum has also demanded 'livelihood compensation' for the victims of Moreh and Churachandpur district for the period of the violence.
The Meetei Council Moreh, Meetei Society Churachandpur and Meitei Youth Organisation Churachandpur have reasoned that the State compensation money is the only resource that victims can claim to rebuild their lives once again.
Thus, they have called upon the State Government to demonstrate authority and generosity by awarding 'meaningful compensation' to each victim.
