Manorama remembered on her 19th death anniversary

Imphal, July 11 2023:
The 19th death anniversary of Thangjam Manorama, who was alleged tortured and killed by security forces on the intervening night of July 10 Her Bamon Kampu Mayai Leikai residence on Tuesday.
Due to the prevailing unrest situation in the state, the function, jointly organised bv Working Committee of the Apunba Lup (WCAL), Thangjam Manorama Chanu Memorial Trust (TMCMT) and family members was observed in a low-key manner marked by offering of floral tributes to the photo of Manorama and observance of a two-minute silence as mark of respect to the departed soul.
Speaking at the event, WCAL coordinator Phulindro Konsam recalled around July 10 midnight,, troopers of 17 AR picked up Manorama from home and killed after, outraging her modesty.
The working committee, trust and family members have been demanding scrapping of AFSPA from the whole state since then.
Though the Act has been withdrawn from seven assembly segments, the pro-military law remains in force in most parts of state contrary to persistent demand by the people, consequently compelling the masses to demand for removal of the Assam Rifles from Manipur.
While commenting on the present restive situation, Phunindro said that WCAL has been closely monitoring the role of Assam Rifles vis-a-vis agenda of Kuki militants along with the Chin-Kuki illegal immigrants to wipe out the Meitei community especially in the aftermath of failure of the Assam Rifles, whose units are deployed in all corners of the state, to prevent poppy plantations, in the hills by Kuki armed groups.
The function was also attended by WCAL coordinator Joy Chingakham, TMCMT president Thiyam Nilbir, PYC president Thokchom Somananda and family members.
