Thoubal, February 18 2024:
Voluntary Network for a Green Earth; Khangabok has condemned the act of cutting down trees in Khangabok area in the last few months by unknown persons under the garb of trimming the branches.
Addressing media persons at Khangabok Part II Ikop Ningthou ground, convenor Laishram Debam said that the Network had planted around 8000 tree saplings in different parts of Khangabok area since 2015 with around 6000 trees fully grown.
However, the matured trees were found cut with only the stem part left.
All the branches have been cut in the name of trimming the trees.
Such acts should not be repeated in future.
Stating that the present crisis is fallout of the drive to destroy poppy plantations in the hills and reprisals by those who are undeterred by damages caused to the environment, he reasoned that the act of cutting down trees in the name of trimming is anti-thesis to the campaign for maintaining the ecological balance.
Similar to laws implemented in other parts of the country prohibiting cutting down of trees by any individual, the same law should also be enforced in the state, he added.
