1st roundtable conference on invasive species, climate change organised

Imphal, January 20 2024: With the stated objective of assessment and documentation of invasive alien species (IAS) in respect of changing climate scenario in the state, Directorate of Environment and Climate Change, State Climate Change Cell on Saturday organised the 1st roundtable conference on "invasive alien species and climate change in Manipur" at Porompat Directorate's premises, here.

The programme moderated by retired IAS Dr RK Nimai was attended by Directorate of Environment and Climate Change director Th Brajakumar, Media Resource Centre coordinator Sobhapati Samom, Manipur University department of Life sciences head professor Th Binoy Singh and IUCN CEESP/IPBES member Salam Rajesh as presidium members.

University Department of Animal Sciences assistant professor Dr M Norjit Singh, Assam Don Bosco university Department of Zoology associate professor Dr Yumnam Lokeshor and plant taxonomist Dr L Malemnganbee Chanu (both through online), Mayai Lambi College Fishery Science Department Dr Arun Laiphrakpam and Mangonganbi College, Ningthoukhong principal RK Birjit who is also IBCN Manipur Chapter state coordinator, also attended the programme as resource persons.

It may be mentioned that the new research from the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES) claims that "several human activities have brought more than 37,000 alien species into different parts of the world's biomes and regions".

Furthermore, the spread of Invasive Alien Species (IAS) is compounded by climate change which has impacted native biodiversity, ecosystem services or human wellbeing.

Thus, proper understanding and documentation of IAS is required for tackling the challenges posed by it.
