Imphal, August 11 2023:
JNIMS director Dr L Deben has urged all concerned to donate their bodies and organs after death instead of letting it go to "waste" by cremating or burying them so as to save precious human lives.
JNIMS organised a distribution function of body donor cards to inmates of Langol Old Age Home at Manipur Press Club here on Friday.
Speaking on the occasion, JNIMS director Dr L Deben said that human life is fleeting, with the point being on who will be the first or last to leave.
Even if one has not done anything remarkable for the society throughout their life, the elderly inmates of the Old Age Home decided to donate their bodies and organs to JNIMS after death, which is of huge benefit to the medical students of the Institute.
This contribution of the elderly, who have been abandoned by their children just because of their old age, should be honoured and lauded, he asserted.
The director also mentioned that the bodies and organs of road accident victims can be donated as well, while recalling the donation of two kidneys belonging to a young man from Singjamei, who died in a road mishap a week ago, by his parents.
While one kidney was given to Shija Hospital, the other was given to JNIMS, where kidney transplantation is provided for free.
So far, JNIMS has performed a total of 28 kidney transplantation successfully.
For the 29th transplantation, the female patient was waiting for a kidney.
She matches with the kidney of the deceased young man and underwent the transplant.
So far, her condition is stable, he conveyed.
Requesting all those who want to donate their organs after death or in case of a death in the family to contact JNIMS immediately, Dr Deben informed that he donated his eyes to the eye bank in 2016.The body donors of the Home, who have received the donor cards, can avail free treatment and diagnostic test at JNIMS.
He then urged for providing the list of medicines required by the donors at the Home, adding that hospital will try its best to deliver them, while appealing to the people to extend support to the Home.
Langol Old Age Home chairman Oinam Mangi said that the elderly inmates of the Home have not received government benefits or schemes meant for senior citizens.
However, it has been operating with the generous support of the people.
He then urged the people to donate their bodies after death in the interest of future generations.
The function was attended by JNIMS MS Dr Kh Lokeshwar, deputy MS Dr Laishram Nganba, Anatomy Department head Prof K Kaini and Ortho Department former head Dr O Guneshwor.
In all, donor cards were distributed to ten body donors from the Home.
