Imphal, August 11 2023:
A Public Interest Litigation (PIL) has been submitted before the High Court of Manipur to direct the State Government to deploy sufficient security personnel and protect lives and public and private properties at Moreh.
The PIL was filed by one Khumanthem Devabrata Singh (60) of Thangmeiband Kabrabam Leikai.
The petitioner also sought the intervention of the High Court to prevent recurrence of violence and destruction of properties at the border town Moreh.
In his petition, Devabrata named the Chief Secretary of Manipur, Special Secretary/Commissioner (Home), Manipur, Director General of Police, Manipur, Tengnoupal Deputy Commissioner and Superintendent of Police and Secretary of the Ministry of Home Affairs of the Union of India as respondents.
The petitioner claimed that over 5000 people were displaced from Moreh on May 4, 2023 alone after a section of the community started burning houses, hotels and other establishments belonging to Meiteis, Meitei Pangals, Tamils and Bengalis at the border town.
He further claimed that 171 houses, shops, hotels and the entire complex of Kondong Lairembi were burnt down at different villages of the border town in the attack.
The petitioner then prayed to the Court to admit the writ petition and direct the Government to take up adequate security at the border town to protect lives and properties of the people of Moreh.
