Imphal, August 11 2023:
The women wing of the Coordinating Committee on Manipur Integrity (COCOMI) has lodged a complaint with the National Commission for Women (NCW) to probe the alleged gangrape case of a Meitei woman on May 3 in Churachandpur and the alleged excesses of the 9 Assam Rifles which caused injuries to 83 women in dispersing protesters at Torbung Bangla, today.
The complaint was lodged through Manipur State Commission for Women.
Addressing the media at Lamphelpat today, convenor of COCOMI's women wing Y Leirik Leima said that the gangrape case of the Meitei woman by Kuki militants emerged only recently and there may be more unregistered cases of rape and crime against women.
Saying that the 'rape victim' may not have filed a report about the incident to police initially in fear of social stigma, Leirik Leima lauded the victim for standing up, though late, and making the world know about the crime committed to her.
Further stating that the case of nude parade of May 4 which went viral just a day ahead of the commencement of the Monsoon session of the Parliament has depicted all Meiteis in the wrong light, she continued that the case has been handed over to CBI for investigation.
Unfortunately, not much is done or talked about to deliver justice to the Meitei woman who was tortured and raped by Kuki goons on the first day of the ongoing violence, she added.
Meanwhile, she said that a mass protest erupted after ITLF made preparations to bury 'slain Kuki militants' at Torbung Bangla on August 3 .
Claiming that the personnel of 9 Assam Rifles however targeted the womenfolk by firing tear gas shells, rubber bullets, pepper spray, Y Leirik Leima said that 83 unarmed women got injured in the alleged excesses of 9 Assam Rifles and CAPF personnel.
She asked why the Assam Rifles is allegedly taking the side of Kuki militants.
