Imphal, April 24 2010:
In view of the frequent flash floods caused during rainy season at Moirang Bazar area, Moirang River and Streams Development Committee has demanded the Government for widening of the river up to 10 metres instead of the proposed 8 metres.
The committee submitted a memorandum to Irrigation and Flood Control (IFC) Minister N Biren in this regard today.
The memorandum complained the Minister that some people residing along the banks have been illegally occupying large portion of the riverbed thereby narrowing the river at market area of the township.
Saying that it is learnt that the ongoing works of widening of the river would be restricted to 8 metres from Moirang Bazar to Philem/Laiphrakpam bridge, the committee urged the Minister to broaden the same up to 10 metres so that water can be flowed easily.
The committee in its memorandum also informed the Minister that paddy fields at Singapat and Sanloa had to witness unnecessary floods every year due to the narrowness of the river at Moirang bazar area.
