Only hope is a Cong Govt : Alka Lamba
Source: The Sangai Express

Imphal, October 03 2026: Saying that violence and unrest will prevail in Manipur as long as there is a BJP Government in the State, All India Mahila Congress Committee president Alka Lamba has asserted that there will be peace and normalcy in Manipur only when there is a Congress Government.

A political conference on "Empowerment of Women in Politics" was organised by Phungyar Block Congress Committee under the aegis of Manipur Pradesh Mahila Congress Committee at Kasom Khullen, Kamjong district today.

Speaking at the conference, Alka Lamba said that Manipur under the BJP Government has been witnessing widespread killings, arsons and violence for over three years.

Till date, the BJP Government has not done anything tangible to contain the violence and restore peace in the State, she said.

The Central Government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah too did nothing to resolve the violent crisis which erupted on May 3, 2023.BJP does not want the Manipur violence to end, Alka Lamba alleged.

She said that BJP leaders will come to the State to campaign for election when the time for election draws near but their words are not trustworthy.

She went on to claim that there will be peace and normalcy in Manipur and the State will be able to march forward on the path of development only when there is a Congress Government in the State.

Several development projects including development of road infrastructure were implemented in the State when there was a Congress Government.

But under the BJP Government, even essential commodities including medicines are not available sufficiently, forget about implementing development projects, said the All India Mahila Congress Committee president.

She remarked that prices of all commodities are much higher in Manipur as compared to other States of India.

Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) president Okram Ibobi said that Imphal-Thoubal-Yairipok-Kasom Khullen road was constructed by the Congress Government with loans from Asian Development Bank (ADB) .

He said that Kasom Khullen is a key location, strategically and commercially.

The road connecting Imphal with Kasom Khullen is a key link to Myanmar, Ibobi said.

He asserted that the BJP Government has been scheming to ignite conflicts and violence among different communities.

Ibobi remarked that the BJP Government has failed miserably in maintaining law and order.

Saying that no State will be able to progress as long as it is embroiled in violence or unrest, he said that people from other States of India and abroad have strong reservations to visit Manipur.

He said that it was late Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi who introduced 30 per cent reservation for women in local bodies.

Even though ruling and Opposition parties had unanimously passed a Bill in the Parliament on 33 per cent reservation for women, the BJP Government has not been implementing the Bill till date, Ibobi said.

The BJP Government has not done anything to lower or stabilize price hike nor has it done anything to create jobs for unemployed youth, he remarked.

It is a matter of grave concern that BJP has been attempting to buy votes by promising Rs 10,000 each to some sections of women.

In their efforts to retain power, BJP has been resorting to kinds of unethical practices, Ibobi said.

Saying that women have a big place in politics, the MPCC president appealed to all sections of people to be wary of BJP's unethical practices and deceptive promises.

He also called upon all to teach BJP a befitting lesson in the next State Assembly election which is due in early 2027 .

Keeping local body elections on hold for such a long time is unheard of in any other State of India and it is a blatant attempt to forfeit citizens' fundamental rights, Ibobi said.

Ibobi who also served as the Chief Minister of Manipur for three consecutive terms said that the BJP Government in cahoots with some of their hand-picked men have been swindling funds sanctioned by the Centre for local bodies.

MPCC working president ex-MLA Victor Keishing said that the BJP Governments at the Centre and the State have failed miserably to protect people's lives and properties in Manipur.

Even as all sections of people have been suffering extreme misery, the BJP Governments remain totally indifferent, he said.

Common people have been facing repeated attacks from Kuki terrorists who infiltrated into the State from across the international border.

People living in the border villages of Kamjong district are currently living a highly insecure life, Victor Keishing said.

MLAs K Ranjit, Okram Surjakumar, ex-Minister Dr Kh Ratankumar, MPCC vice-president Md Amin Shah and Manipur Pradesh Mahila Congress Committee president M Sarma too attended the conference.

A similar political conference was also held at Taobungkhok, Imphal West.
