NRC demand continues

Imphal, October 04 2026: Sit in protests were held today at Uripok Sorbon Thingel Haorongbam Leikai and Iroishemba today, demanding updation of the National Register of Citizens before the census.

The protest demonstration was organised under the aegis of All Manipur United Clubs' Organisation (AMU-CO), All Manipur Women's Voluntary Association (AMAWOVA), Poirei Lei-marol Meira Paibi Apunba Manipur (PLMPAM), Committee on Human Rights (CoHR) and Manipuri Students' Federation (MSF) .

Speaking to the media, AMUCO president Soro-khaibam Sanjoy urged the Government to take immediate measures to update the NRC, with 1951 as the base year.

He said no census-related activities should be taken up until the issue of illegal immigrants is addressed.

Stating that the Government must listen to the democratic protests, he added that they might launch more intense forms of agitation if the demand remains unaddressed.
