Imphal, October 01 2026: With opposition to the proposal to hold the Sangai Festival growing louder, Tourism Minister Kh Loken has stated that the Government plans to organise the festival not for the sake of the Government or any individual, but for the people of Manipur.

He made the statement during the induction programme for the fourth batch of students of the Institute of Hotel Management, Catering Technology and Applied Nutrition, Manipur held at the institute's main campus at Nongmaiching in Imphal East today.

During the function, uniforms were also distributed to 20 fresh students of the institute.

Addressing the function, Loken said that the Sangai Festival plays a major role in showcasing the art and culture of Manipur.

He appealed to the people to support the Government in taking up tourism-related programmes, given the State's immense potential in the sector.

Despite Manipur having many beautiful places in both the hill and valley districts, the Government has been unable to develop them as tourist destinations due to various challenges, he said.

He added that conflicts among different communities would only create hurdles to developmental programmes, including those in the tourism sector.
