Imphal, October 04 2026:
The United Peoples of Manipur (UPOM) staged a sit-in protest at Khurai Lamlong today, raising a series of demands.
The demands included updation of the National Register of Citizens (NRC), with 1951 as the base year, abrogation of the Suspension of Operations (SoO) pact signed between the Government and Kuki armed groups, and protection of village volunteers.
Speaking to the media, UPOM convenor Laishram Amarjit said the protest was organised in support of the movement launched by the Campaign for Just and Fair Delimitation (JFD), seeking updation of the NRC with 1951 as the base year before conducting the census.
Apart from identifying illegal immigrants, he urged the Government not to arrest village volunteers who came out to protect their villages from the onslaught of Kuki armed groups and to abrogate the SoO pact.
The protest demonstration was participated by JFD members, women vendors of Khurai Lamlong Keithel, and members of local clubs and meira paibi groups from the Khurai area.
