Month-long Jananeta Hijam Irawat celebration programme begins

The launch function of the month-long 127th Jananeta Hijam Irawat celebration programme cum All India Farmers' Demand Day was held today at BT Road.
The programme organised by Irawat Celebration Committee (ICC), Manipur and Manipur Loumi Lup (MLL) was attended CPI-Manipur State Council chairman L Iboyaima, secretary L Thoiren, former secretary L Sotinkumar, MLL president N Singhajit and All Manipur Nupi Lup (AMNL) president M Sakhi as presidium members.
Offering floral tributes to the portrait of the Jananeta was the main highlight of the programme.
Speaking at the function, L Iboyaima said that they will observe the entire month (September) as Manipur Integrity Month.
He said that Hijam Irawat was a dynamic and multi -faceted leader who saved the territorial integrity of Manipur in the late 1940s by launching a protest against the formation of Purbanchal Pradesh.
The first Manipur State Assembly with 53 members was elected on adult franchise under Manipur State Constitution Act in July 1948, Iboyaima continued.
Saying that Manipur became a Part-C State of India after the signing of the merger agreement in 1949, he added that Manipur was given Statehood only in 1972 following a widespread protest.
He went on to state that September is important in the context of Manipur as Jananeta Irawat who had done so much for the State was born and died in this month.
Irawat was born on September 30, 1896 and breathed his last on September 26, 1951 .
L Thoiren, on the other hand, said that the Centre and Manipur must exercise its full authority to end the violence in Manipur without compromising the integrity of the State.
