Demo on shelling at Nongshum, Sugnu bombarded

Assam Rifles personnel organised a practice cum demonstration on mortar shelling at Nongshum hills on the eastern side of Pukhao Shantipur under Sagolmang Police Station of Imphal East district on Monday.
According to a police report, owing to intermittent exchange of heavy fire between two communities in the past few days in Pukhao Shantipur area, the AR personnel stationed themselves at the bunker on M Top along the hill range to control the firing and subsequently, helped in ceasing the gunfight.
However, despite the ceasefire, armed members from both communities are taking positions to engage in gunfight at any instance.
Taking note of the tense situation, personnel of two AR battalions informed the OC of Sagolmang police station that a practice and demonstration would be carried out.
On Monday morning, the personnel carried out the practice and demonstration on the hill range by bring rocket launchers and mortars.
Both communities were informed of the practice and demonstration beforehand and as such, many watched the personnel perform the operation.
Amid the shelling practice and demonstration near the Imphal East district village, intermittent bomb and gun attacks by armed Kuki militants continued in distant Sugnu under Kakching district, from the side of Lailoiphai and Dongyang in Churachandpur district including Napat, on Monday.
Villagers of Sugnu along with the police conducted search for unexploded bombs in different parts of Sugnu area after the bombardment carried out by armed Kuki militants.
Amid the intermittent firing by armed Kuki militants, the state force and personnel of BSF also retaliated.
The Kuki militants fired several rounds of bullets towards Meetei settlement in different parts of Sugnu.
It may be mentioned here that after two personnel of central security forces were injured in an attack by Kukis on February 4, another village volunteers suffered bomb splinter wounds in Sunday's attack.
Villagers informed that three elderly people have died of BP stroke due to shock suffered in bomb attacks by Kuki militants.
On the other-hand, Assam Rifles and Manipur police conducted joint search operation in general area of Koubru ridge in Kangpokpi district, and recovered cache of arms and ammunition.
The recovered items include one each SLR with magazine and 9mm pistol, two 36-hand grenades and 10 rounds of 7.62 mm ammunition.
