Centre, State lack commitment to restore peace: EEVFAM

Imphal, July 11 2023: The Extrajudicial Execution Victim Families Association Manipur (EEVFAM) has said that the Centre and the Manipur Government is unconcerned about the violence in the State although so many people have been killed and murdered as they still don't show any commitment to restore peace and normalcy.

EEVFAM observed its 14th foundation day at Kwakeithel today.

At the observance, EEVFAM president Renu Takhellambam asked if the Indian Government had a hidden agenda on Manipur violence or waiting for more people to die before taking any concrete actions.

Saying that the people of Manipur need to understand who their common foe is instead of killing one another, Renu said that killing of innocent is nothing new in Manipur as India has been oppressing and killing many Manipuris under its controversial Armed Forces Special Power Act (AFSPA) since decades back.

Renu also said that they understand the pain and suffering of many families who have been victimised and separated from their spouses, children and parents as they too are all victims of AFSPA.

What is more disturbing is the inaction of the Centre on Manipur violence which since breaking out on May 3 has displaced tens of thousands of families and killed over 130 persons, she rued.

Asking how the Government at the Centre sees Manipur as, Renu continued that it is only the Manipuris who are bearing the brunt of the ongoing violence.

Extending solidarity to all the families who have lost their loved ones, she appealed to the Government to take up appropriate actions to restore peace and normalcy in Manipur and also prevent such violence from happening ever again.

EEVFAM general secretary Yaikhom Edina, while delivering the keynote address, said that their association was formed on July 11, 2009 by the families of people who got killed in fake encounters.

She claimed that the successive Central Governments have been using different tactics to wipe out the indigenous Manipuris and the ongoing violence is not an exception.

Saying that EEVFAM doesn't want any families to experience the pain that they have already encountered, Edina urged the Government to show commitment and end the violence in Manipur.
