Minister eyes Wanglee as second trade hub

Observing that Wanglee in Kasom Khullen sub-division of Kamjong district has the potential to become second international trade hub, RD&PR minister Yumnam has assured to develop an Indo-Myanmar trade route along Imphal-Wanglee road.
The minister made the remark during an inspection visit of different PMGSY road projects being taken up between Nambasi to Wanglee on Tuesday, accompanied by Phungyar MLA Leishiyo Keishing and additional chief engineer of rural engineering department along with other department officials.
The minister took particular interest in the 15-km road project extending up to Wanglee including 5 km long section of Kasom Khullen-Mawai village, which is being taken up at a cost of Rs 6.92 crore, and instructed the officials to complete the proj -ect before the rainy season.
Khemchand said that Wanglee has the potential for developing as the second international trade hub of the state.
However, there are still many issues concerning connectivity and infrastructure.
The Nambasi-Phungchong (Punomram) - Wanglee road is a PMGSY project and is suitable for only four wheeler vehicles but not for heavy vehicles.
The 6 km long road is still not in the map of state PWD, he said.
In order to develop Wanglee as an international trade hub, the road needs to be upgraded into all-purpose highway, he said while assuring to explore possibilities of developing the road as a major highway either through Central funding or state PWD.
He also acknowledged the importance of the road in the wake of the current crisis in the state, which has practically closed the Imphal-Moreh highway.
MLA Leishiyo Keishing also expressed the same sentiment over the road and its significance amid the current crisis.
He also expressed concern over delay in the project, mainly due to heavy vehicles plying along the road.
He drew attention of the government to improve condition of the road and also develop Wanglee market like Moreh.
