Imphal, March 13 2024:
Rural Development and Panchayati Raj (RD&PR) Minister Yumnam Khemchand yesterday conducted a spot inspection for construction of 6 Kms long road from Wanglee village to Wanglee Bazar under Kasom Khullen sub-division, close to Myanmar border.
Y Khemchand was accompanied by Phungyar AC MLA Leishiyo Keishing and RD&PR officials.
He also interacted with leaders of the village.
Addressing a reception at Wanglee Trade Centre, Y Khemchand said that he came there to see if the 6 Kms long road from Wanglee village to Wanglee Bazar can be constructed under PMGSY.
The particular road would be inserted in the work programme of PMGSY.
If not, necessary fund would be sanctioned to the PWD through the Planning Department for construction of the same road, Khemchand said.
Saying that Wanglee would become a major economic centre of the State after some years, Khemchand said that the route to border trade may be shifted as people no longer feel safe on Imphal-Moreh highway.
Considering the movement of heavy trucks loaded with timber on Wanglee road, the same road must be constructed with due emphasis on the qualitative aspect, he said.
Noting that the existing condition of the road is pathetic, the RD&PR Minister said that construction of the particular road as an all-weather road can contribute significantly to the economic development of the State.
MLA Leishiyo Keishing expressed gratitude to Y Khemchand for travelling all the way to Wanglee and inspecting the road amidst the turmoil besieging the State.
With cross-border trade on most items done through Wanglee, it is now emerging as an alternative trade centre to Moreh, Leishiyo said.
If the road to Wanglee is developed as a proper highway, it would be one of the shortest roads to the Myanmar border and this would help the overall economic development of the State, Leishiyo said.
